Through the chilly shift to July, I traveled for a fortnight with Megan, Nikki and Jono just six degrees South of the equator, to Zanzibar. It was a lot warmer on the island than in Jo'burg, the equally isolated city from which we fled. These photos document the entrance to our travels.
This is my nephew, Jake. Being born in Jo'burg a handful of weeks prior, I had not yet met him. With his quiet intent, he could be a muse for Auguste Rodin.
Mark, my Brother-in-law, is the benevolent purveyor of penthouses. Uh, the building, not the magazine.

Stone Town
As beautiful as Stone Town is, it often felt like something sinister was going on in the dark hollows of every shattered-window building.
The Night Food Market. A guy dubbed 'Mr Happiness' tried to con me, but I had my kingfish and ate it too.
Children often walked up to me and stood in my way, just waiting. They were surprisingly keen on being photographed.
