aKING and Gangs of Ballet

Unit 11, a grimy sanctuary for the suburban dispossessed on the fringe of Durban town, was the weekend host to veteran first-timers Gangs of Ballet and Cape Town pop rockers aKING. Gangs' set was smooth and radio-friendly; an impressive first show that kept a fair share of the 400-strong crowd jostling for the front. aKING followed, and although they did battle with some annoying sound issues, their tawny afros pulled it together and they rumbled out a feel-good sing-along set. They even stuck around for an encore, but this may have had something to do with the lack of a back stage to amble to.
